The smart electric grid has exciting research challenges and it will benefit society. The smart grid will reduce dependence on fossil fuels and decrease energy wastage. This symposium describes the smart grid, discusses research challenges, and offers a venue for students and researchers from universities, companies, government and other organizations to set up collaborations and exchange ideas. The symposium is an industry-university collaboration between Southern California Edison and a consortium of universities including USC, UCLA, UCI and Caltech.
